Education

At Sanner's Lake one of our main objectives of the club is "To foster and promote outdoors sports, environmental and wildlife conservation, and public safety through education and other activities."  We offer many educational opportunties to members and to the general public as well. Included in these are:

    Field Day for DNR Hunter Education Internet Based Classroom Course.

    1.  **Prerequisite** Students must bring their on line voucher with them to the workshop. Failure to present this voucher will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    2. You will be required to provide a photo ID and proof of age upon arrival (driver’s license or copy of birth certificate). Failure to provide these two requirements will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    3. You will participate in a lecture covering hunter ethics, basic firearm safety and handling, and tree stand safety.
    4. You must successfully complete a 50 question Maryland specific exam with a minimum score of 80%.
    5. You will participate in field exercises which will include firearms handling and live firing. You will be evaluated in each of these activities. These activities take place outside, so dress accordingly.
    6. Students will not bring firearms and ammunition to the workshop.  Firearms, ammunition, eye and ear protection will be furnished.  If you prefer, you may bring your own ear and eye protection.
    7. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Firearms and Hunter Safety which allows you to purchase a hunting license.
    8. The field day workshop may last 4 to 6 hours, depending on number of students.

    DNR Bow Hunter Specialty Course.

    1. Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
    2. On the first day of class, a booklet will be distributed, called todays hunter. We will use that booklet to teach the remainder of class, and to be taken home as a study guide.
    3. The course will begin at 9am, please be flexible on the departure time, as we will have a lot of material to cover. Attendance is required both days.
    4. Must have your own equipment.
    5. Broad heads are used to shoot five arrows at unmarked distances.
    6. Three of the five arrows need to be place in the vitals organs to qualify.
    7. Dress appropriately for weather and wear supportive footwear.
    8. There will be a written test, if you feel you may need help with the test please let one of the instructors know.
    9. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Bow Hunting.

    Welcome to SLSC's Women-on-Target introductory handgun training class.  This event is limited to females ONLY as it is held as an an NRA Women-on-Target event. This event will run from 8:00 AM to ~4:00 PM. It includes training materials, safety equipment (eye and ear protection), targets, ammunition, range-time and firearms rental, support of NRA-certified firearms instructor(s), NRA “goody-bag”, catered lunch, and offer of a special discounted WoT membership in the NRA. This event also includes a separate non-NRA course-module that provides an overview of MD State Firearms Laws, thereby meeting the training requirements for the Handgun Qualification License (HQL). Event will be held rain or shine. Upon registration via this site, please mail your course-payment (personal check or money-order payable to "SLSC Training") for $75 to: SLSC (WoT- Put Class Date Here), P.O. Box 1300, Lexington Park, MD 20653. Minimum age is 18.     Open only for SLSC members initially (priority seating).  If seats are available thereafter, only then will they be offered to the general public.  12 students max.

    This class is to teach students to become NRA Rifle Instructors. 

    • Pre-qual - Day 1 using 1/2 Rifle Range.
    • Basic Instructor Training (BIT) - Days 2 & 3.  BIT must be taken unless it was taken and passed within the previous 2 years.
    • Rifle Instructor -- Days 3, 4 & 5.

    Cost:

    • $200 for members
    • $250 for non-members
    • Substantial scholarships/subsidies may be made available to students who will teach on a not-for-profit basis and who will volunteer to support the SLSC training program.

    NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home (PPOTH) class.  Students must attend ALL 4 Days to receive graduation certificates.

    Requirements:  Students must have already successfully completed the NRA PPOTH Student Class.  Students must be competent and safe in the use of their centerfire handgun.   Students must also have a safe, modern and clean centerfire pistol or revolver in .39 Special / 9mm or larger caliber.  Recommend 150+ rounds of factory-new ammunition.
