Hours of Operation

The Archery Range is available for use from sunrise to sunset each day of the year except when the club is closed and during special events as noted on the calendar.

    Field Day for DNR Hunter Education Internet Based Classroom Course.

    1.  **Prerequisite** Students must bring their on line voucher with them to the workshop. Failure to present this voucher will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    2. You will be required to provide a photo ID and proof of age upon arrival (driver’s license or copy of birth certificate). Failure to provide these two requirements will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    3. You will participate in a lecture covering hunter ethics, basic firearm safety and handling, and tree stand safety.
    4. You must successfully complete a 50 question Maryland specific exam with a minimum score of 80%.
    5. You will participate in field exercises which will include firearms handling and live firing. You will be evaluated in each of these activities. These activities take place outside, so dress accordingly.
    6. Students will not bring firearms and ammunition to the workshop.  Firearms, ammunition, eye and ear protection will be furnished.  If you prefer, you may bring your own ear and eye protection.
    7. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Firearms and Hunter Safety which allows you to purchase a hunting license.
    8. The field day workshop may last 4 to 6 hours, depending on number of students.

    DNR Bow Hunter Specialty Course.

    1. Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
    2. On the first day of class, a booklet will be distributed, called todays hunter. We will use that booklet to teach the remainder of class, and to be taken home as a study guide.
    3. The course will begin at 9am, please be flexible on the departure time, as we will have a lot of material to cover. Attendance is required both days.
    4. Must have your own equipment.
    5. Broad heads are used to shoot five arrows at unmarked distances.
    6. Three of the five arrows need to be place in the vitals organs to qualify.
    7. Dress appropriately for weather and wear supportive footwear.
    8. There will be a written test, if you feel you may need help with the test please let one of the instructors know.
    9. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Bow Hunting.

    United States' Archery Association (USAA) Level-1 Instructor Certification Class for Basic Archery.

    Class in the Sanner's Lake clubhouse from 8 to 4 with classroom and archery range time.  Lunch will either be brown-bag or we can give folks ~45 minutes to run out for fast-food.

    Cost is $75 for the general public.  

    Cost is $50 for SLSC-Members and family/friends.

    Cost is $50 for Youth 16 and up, and Adult Members of Youth Groups (i.e. Boy-Scouts, Girl Scouts, Awana, Trail Life, etc.).

    Fees are payable at the event with cash or checks payable to "SLSC-Training".

    We provide all materials, including bows/arrows/etc. or you can bring your own gear.   Class includes longbows, recurves, compounds, and crossbows.

    4. You will participate in a lecture covering hunter ethics, basic firearm safety and handling, and tree stand safety.
    5. You must successfully complete a 50 question Maryland specific exam with a minimum score of 80%.
    6. You must participate in field exercises which will include firearms handling and live firing. You will be evaluated in each of these activities. These activities take place outside, so dress accordingly.

    9. This traditional class is free of any costs to the student.
    10. An online resource can be used to study in advance, http://www.hunter-ed.com/maryland/studyGuide/201021 . Do not take the online test, There is a cost of $15 to take the final test, which is not valid for this class (we give the test for free).

    Tree stand Safety:

    The class will examine personal equipment that will be used, tree stand safety, suspension trauma, and specification of the elevated stands located at Sanners Lake.  After a classroom lecture, participants must score greater than 90% on a 20 question written exam, sign an injury waiver, inspect full body harness for serviceability, inspect fall arrest system for serviceability, successfully perform a self-rescue/recovery in a training environment to gain confidence in their safety equipment, and lastly properly demonstrate the proper user of archery range stands and equipment.

    Upon successful completion of the curriculum, the SLSC members card will be stamped, and combination given to the stand.

    Participants must bring:

    • Serviceable Full Body Harness (FBH).
    •  Fall Arrest System (FAS). The FAS must be at least 10 feet long, carabiner, and Prussic knot.
    • Extra Carabiner to lock the Fall Arrest System (FAS) into D-link.
    • Non-electronic Signaling device (whistle).
    • Haul line for equipment.
    •  Proper shoes (nothing that will fall off climbing).
    • Equipment must be rated for the owner and their equipment.
    • Equipment expires after 2019
