Course Description: Classroom and range instruction will be Sat, 10 April, 2021(0800-approx. 1700; check-in starts 0745.)

Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, course completion certificate and take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination.  MD HQL Training certificate will also be included upon successful completion of the class.

Class will run from 8 AM until ~5:00 PM. Please arrive promptly out of respect for other students.

Course Details:

Course includes NRA training materials, safety equipment (eye and ear protection), targets, ammunition, range-time and firearms rental, and support of certified firearms instructor(s). NRA Basic Pistol certification will be issued to all qualified participants.

Event will also include a catered working lunch. If you have special dietary needs please contact the lead instructor at least a week ahead of the class.

This event also includes a separate course-module that provides an overview of MD State Firearms Laws, thereby meeting the training requirements for the Handgun Qualification License (HQL). HQL Training Certificates will be issued to all qualified participants.

Event will be held rain or shine.

Course fee is payable at the event. Fee is $85 ($75 for SLSC-members and immediate family) payable via check or cash. Minimum age is 21 (18 if a parent or guardian is also a participant).

Livescan finger printing may be made available at this event at cost of $65 with $5 discount if the application form is completed at least 3 days prior to the class and emailed to stevep@safehiresolutions.com. Fee is payable directly to SafeHireSolutions, our LIVESCAN provider.***Note: if you want LiveScan finger prints done by SafeHireSolutions during the class, you must complete the LiveScan information sheet at least 3 days prior to class and send them tostevep@safehiresolutions.com***

***If you are attending this class to obtain an HQL and will want LiveScan fingerprints done, please reply to all stating this.  Mr. Piazza will send you a form that needs to be filled out prior to class.

What to bring/not do on Sat:

  • ·Masks will be required for the classroom portion.

  • ·Writing utensil.

  • ·DO NOT bring firearms or ammunition to classroom instruction, you will be told when to present your firearm for inspection.

  • ·You may bring your own handgun and factory new ammo in a case(firearm must be cased to and from the shooting line) to the range only. **Instructor will inspect all firearms before used on the range. (The instructor will have loaner handguns of several models to use and try if you need)

Directions From Points North of Lexington Park: Take Route 4 South (or from MD Route 5 to 235) to Route 235 (you will cross the bridge over the Patuxent River). At 235 (aka, Three Notch Rd), turn left and continue South on 235 until you see a Sheetz (located in California, MD) on your right. (This will be approximately the 5th traffic light.) Turn right at Sheets onto Chancellors Run Road. Go to the end of Chancellors Run Road and turn left onto Great Mills Road. Go approximately 1 mile until passing Taylor’s Gas and Heating on right. Approx .2 mi after Taylor’s Gas, Sanner’s Lane is a RIGHT-HAND TURN just before the golf driving range (now closed). Proceed down Sanner’s Lane past white farm house on right (approx .25 mi at end of lane).

After passing to the left of the white farm house, turn right into the gravel drive (just to the right of the chainlink-gated gravel company), enter through the Club security gate,which should be left open, and drive straight for approximately .2 mile, passing the club beach on your right. At the end of that drive, you will see the grey clubhouse, please park next to pond just before clubhouse.

***We will meet at the clubhouse Sunday morning prior to 0800, which is located straight back through the gate (do not make any turns once you pass gate, and the road dead-ends at the club house).

If you are bringing your own handgun and factory ammunition, ensure sure your handgun is clean, lubricated and functioning beforehand. You should also bring your firearms operators’ manual. **Please leave all firearms and ammunition in your vehicles until directed to retrieve them for the Range portion.***Live ammunition is NEVER allowed in the classroom**.
