In accordance with our Club's By-Laws, training, outreach, and education are a major objective of the Club.

We offer training and certification in the following disciplines:

Most instructor certification courses are given infrequently, once per year or less.   If we cannot generate enough interest to fill the classes, they will be cancelled.

    As a final assessment of your skills and safe gun handling knowledge and practices, we will conduct a brief live-fire assessment at the pistol Bulls Eye Range.

    Class will run from 8 AM until ~5:00 PM.   Please arrive promptly out of respect for other students.

    Field Day for DNR Hunter Education Internet Based Classroom Course.

    1.  **Prerequisite** Students must bring their on line voucher with them to the workshop. Failure to present this voucher will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    2. You will be required to provide a photo ID and proof of age upon arrival (driver’s license or copy of birth certificate). Failure to provide these two requirements will prohibit you from continuing in the program.
    3. You will participate in a lecture covering hunter ethics, basic firearm safety and handling, and tree stand safety.
    4. You must successfully complete a 50 question Maryland specific exam with a minimum score of 80%.
    5. You will participate in field exercises which will include firearms handling and live firing. You will be evaluated in each of these activities. These activities take place outside, so dress accordingly.
    6. Students will not bring firearms and ammunition to the workshop.  Firearms, ammunition, eye and ear protection will be furnished.  If you prefer, you may bring your own ear and eye protection.
    7. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Firearms and Hunter Safety which allows you to purchase a hunting license.
    8. The field day workshop may last 4 to 6 hours, depending on number of students.

    Course Description: Classroom and range instruction will be Sat, 17 July, 2021 (0800-approx. 1700; check-in starts 0745.)  

    Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

    This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two-handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, course completion certificate and take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination.  MD HQL Training certificate will also be included upon successful completion of the class.

    DNR Bow Hunter Specialty Course.

    1. Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
    2. On the first day of class, a booklet will be distributed, called todays hunter. We will use that booklet to teach the remainder of class, and to be taken home as a study guide.
    3. The course will begin at 9am, please be flexible on the departure time, as we will have a lot of material to cover. Attendance is required both days.
    4. Must have your own equipment.
    5. Broad heads are used to shoot five arrows at unmarked distances.
    6. Three of the five arrows need to be place in the vitals organs to qualify.
    7. Dress appropriately for weather and wear supportive footwear.
    8. There will be a written test, if you feel you may need help with the test please let one of the instructors know.
    9. Upon successful completion of all of the above and approval of the instructors you will be issued a Certificate of Competency in Bow Hunting.

    NRA Approved High Power Rifle National Match Course
    • This is a 50 round course of fire with up to 5 sighting rounds allowed prior to firing for record. NRA rules will be followed.
    • Metallic sights only are allowed.
    • You will be firing from the prone, standing and sitting or kneeling positions.
    • Contact Dick for a copy of the match program which contains detailed match, equipment and match entry fee information.

    This class is to teach students to become NRA Pistol Instructors.  Instructor candidates must attend all days of the course in order to receive course credit. Candidates must complete the Basics of Pistol Shooting Instructor Led Course, as well as the pre-course questionnaire and pre-course qualification.

    Course consists of two elements:

    • Basic Instructor Training (BIT) - day 1.   Note that BIT is not required if you have passed a BIT course within the previous 2 years.  If that is the case, please provide BIT documentation to instructor.
    • Pistol Instructor - day 1 afternoon and full day 2.

    Cost: $250

    • Scholarships MAY be made available to candidates who will teach on a not-for-profit basis and in support of the SLSC training program.  Contact Training Counselor for details.
    Pre-Qualification:   Phase I CBT is no longer required as a prerequisite for Instructor Candidates.  Pre-Course Questionnaire, and Pre-Course Gun-Handling Assessment, Shooting-Safety Test, and Hot-Range Skills Qualification.  

    Hot-range pre-qual will be offered day #1 of class, using instructor-candidates' own firearms and ammunition.

    Course Description:  Classroom training and Club Walk-Live Fire Assessment will be one 9 hr class (new members only need to choose one day) (0800-approx. 1700; check-in starts 0745.)  

    Goal; to develop NRA Certified Range Safety Officers who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

    In addition to NRA RSO course material, we will discuss SLSC, Inc. ByLaws, Standard Operating Procedures and other SLSC, Inc. specific information to help orient you to your new club.

    As a final assessment of your skills and safe gun handling knowledge and practices, we will conduct a brief live-fire assessment at the pistol Bulls Eye Range.

    Class will run from 8 AM until ~5:00 PM.   Please arrive promptly out of respect for other students.

    Course includes NRA training materials.

    Event will be held rain or shine.
